UCLA Scientists Develop Breakthrough Sunscreen Formulation

One of beauty’s longest-standing frustrations may finally be over. Scientists at the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have developed a breakthrough mineral sunscreen formulation. This innovative solution eliminates the chalky white residue that has deterred millions from daily sun protection.

The secret lies in a clever alteration in the shape of zinc oxide particles. Traditionally, these particles have a round form that scatters visible light, leaving skin looking pale and ghostly. However, the researchers engineered four-armed microscopic structures, known as tetrapods.

These tetrapod-shaped particles reflect light differently, producing a tone that appears warmer and closer to natural skin. This effect is achieved without any special coatings or added pigments.

The new formula achieves an SPF of approximately 30, matching the standard for mineral sunscreens. Additionally, it is more stable over time as the unique shape prevents particles from clumping. Experts believe this innovation could be particularly impactful for people with darker skin tones. These individuals are statistically less likely to use sunscreen regularly and more likely to be diagnosed with skin cancer at later, harder-to-treat stages.

The study was published in the journal ACS Materials Letters and was re-highlighted by ScienceDaily in July 2026.
