Boost Your Immune System with a 30-Minute Sauna Session
Your next spa day might be doing more than just helping you relax — it could be supercharging your immune system. According to a recent study from the University of Eastern Finland, a single 30-minute Finnish sauna session can significantly increase the circulation of immune cells in your bloodstream.
The researchers studied 51 adults, averaging 50 years of age. They discovered that heat exposure increased every type of circulating white blood cell. This includes key infection fighters such as neutrophils and lymphocytes. The effect was even more pronounced when the sauna session was paired with a brief cold shower halfway through.
Scientists believe that the heat temporarily mobilizes white blood cells from body tissues into the bloodstream. This effectively puts the immune system on “higher alert.”
Interestingly, women showed an especially strong response. Their elevated white blood cell counts remained significantly higher even 30 minutes after leaving the sauna. While the study only measured the immediate effects of a single session, it could not establish whether repeated use produces lasting changes. Nevertheless, researchers say the findings shed important new light on the biological mechanisms behind sauna’s well-known health benefits.
