Nvidia in Negotiations for a Record $250B Financial Guarantee for OpenAI’s Ohio Data Center

In what could potentially be the most significant financing deal in the history of AI, Nvidia is reported to be in discussions to provide an astounding $250 billion financial guarantee to aid OpenAI in leasing a colossal data center campus in southern Ohio. This report comes courtesy of The Wall Street Journal.

The 10-gigawatt facility, being developed by SB Energy—the energy subsidiary of Japan’s SoftBank—is located on a decommissioned uranium-enrichment site approximately 50 miles south of Columbus. Once completed, inclusive of the semiconductor hardware, the project’s total cost could surpass $500 billion, making it the largest data center development ever announced.

For OpenAI, this deal signifies a crucial step towards managing its own computing infrastructure, as opposed to renting capacity from tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle. On the other hand, for Nvidia, the arrangement ensures a long-term demand for its AI chips. Nvidia’s proposed backstop aims to reassure lenders and secure project financing, given OpenAI’s current lack of an investment-grade credit rating. However, negotiations are still underway, and a final agreement is yet to be reached.

Nvidia has already invested $30 billion in OpenAI, and a parallel negotiation is reportedly underway for Nvidia to assist in funding OpenAI’s chip acquisition—a figure that could potentially reach an additional $350 billion.
