FDA Gives Green Light to Revolutionary Sunscreen Ingredient After 25 Years
In a groundbreaking development for skin health and consumer protection, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has officially sanctioned bemotrizinol (BEMT) as a fresh active ingredient in over-the-counter sunscreens. This is the first such approval in over a quarter of a century. The decision, unveiled in early June 2026, offers American consumers access to a caliber of broad-spectrum UV protection that has been accessible in Europe and Asia for a long time, but was previously absent on U.S. store shelves.
Bemotrizinol, a non-mineral chemical UV filter, shields against both ultraviolet A (UVA) and B (UVB) rays. It is notably more stable in sunlight than older alternatives like avobenzone, implying it breaks down less readily during sun exposure. The FDA has endorsed it as “generally recognized as safe and effective” for adults and children as young as 6 months old.
The ingredient will initially be introduced in the U.S. by DSM-Firmenich under the brand name Parsol Shield. It is anticipated to launch later in 2026, with an 18-month exclusivity period before other manufacturers can incorporate it into their products. With over 200,000 cases of melanoma predicted for 2026 alone, skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S. This approval marks a significant public health milestone just in time for summer.
