United Airlines Flight Rerouted Due to Attempted Cockpit Breach
A United Airlines flight, en route from Chicago to Minneapolis, was rerouted to Madison, Wisconsin, on May 29, 2026. This unexpected diversion was due to a passenger’s multiple attempts to breach the cockpit, as reported by air traffic control audio and FBI statements. The incident on Flight 2005 has sparked renewed concerns about in-flight security and the issue of unruly passenger behavior.
Based on crew communications reviewed by CNN and other media outlets, law enforcement officers onboard the plane managed to restrain the passenger after his persistent attempts to access the flight deck. The crew reported that the individual was eventually seated, with law enforcement officers on either side, until the aircraft landed safely at Dane County Regional Airport. This occurred approximately 90 minutes after departing from Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
The Boeing 737, carrying 147 passengers and six crew members, landed without any injuries. The FBI’s Madison Resident Agency and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office responded promptly, and the subject was detained. Prior to takeoff, the passenger had stood up during taxiing, prompting crew members to request a Russian interpreter to facilitate communication with him.
The Federal Aviation Administration reports that airlines have documented more than 640 unruly passenger incidents so far in 2026. Violators face civil penalties up to $43,658 per violation.
