MagniX Unveils Pre-Orders for 175 kW Electric Engine for Kit Planes
Electric aviation pioneer, magniX based in Everett, Washington, has officially begun accepting pre-orders for its revolutionary magniAIR electric engine. This move targets the experimental and kit plane market, marking a significant stride towards incorporating electric propulsion into everyday general aviation.
The magniAIR is a 175 kW (≈235 hp) air-cooled electric engine that weighs a mere 55 kg. MagniX asserts that this engine delivers unparalleled power-to-weight for the segment, positioning it as a direct replacement for traditional piston engines in the 120–175 kW range.
With a $2,000 USD deposit, customers can now secure a production slot. The full sales packages will include the magniAIR engine, magniX Samson batteries, power electronics, and a complete firewall-forward kit for select popular kit planes such as the Van’s Aircraft RV-10.
The pricing is designed to compete with existing combustion-based solutions, with first deliveries anticipated for 2027.
Currently, magniX is integrating the magniAIR into a Van’s RV-10 for a first flight scheduled in early 2027. The subsequent phases of the program will target electric flight trainers and light-sport aircraft under the FAA’s new MOSAIC regulatory framework.
CEO Reed Macdonald hailed the pre-order launch as “an exciting milestone” in making electric aviation accessible to kit builders and recreational flyers alike.
