IBM and Red Hat Launch $5B Initiative to Reinforce Open Source Security
IBM and Red Hat have unveiled Project Lightwell, a monumental $5 billion commitment aimed at transforming the security of open source software in the AI era. Launched on May 28, 2026, the initiative mobilizes over 20,000 engineers, supplemented by advanced AI capabilities, to establish a reliable enterprise clearinghouse for securing open source software.
The project emerges in response to escalating concerns as AI tools simplify the process for hackers to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in open source software, the backbone of most enterprise systems. IBM currently utilizes over 62,000 open source packages across a range of technologies, including Linux, Kubernetes, and Kafka.
“Open source is the backbone of today’s digital economy and the foundation of modern AI, and we are at an inflection point in how it is built, secured, and scaled,” said Arvind Krishna, IBM’s Chairman and CEO.
The clearinghouse will leverage AI to identify, validate, and test fixes across unprecedented volumes of code. IBM has already trialed the program with major financial institutions such as Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Visa.
The commercial subscription service is set to launch within the next 30 days, with pricing likely to be tied to the number of packages clients use.
