Tesla Experiences 36% Sales Surge in China Amidst Market Revival

Tesla’s operations in China are gathering impressive momentum, as evidenced by a 36% year-over-year surge in wholesale sales in April 2026. This data comes courtesy of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). The electric vehicle giant sold a staggering 79,478 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from its Shanghai Gigafactory in the past month alone, marking the sixth consecutive month of annual gains.

This April’s figures signify Tesla’s most robust April performance ever from Giga Shanghai, outdoing the previous record set in 2023. In the first four months of 2026, Tesla has sold 292,876 vehicles from this facility, a 26.7% year-over-year increase. This is a significant rebound following a challenging 2025 when the company lost market share to more affordable Chinese EV manufacturers.

Despite these gains, challenges persist. Sales dipped 7.2% from March, and Tesla continues to grapple with mounting competition from domestic competitors such as BYD, NIO, and Xiaomi. The company is also in the process of securing full approval for its Full Self-Driving system in China, with CFO Vaibhav Taneja indicating a delay in the target to the third quarter. The Shanghai wholesale figures include both domestic deliveries and exports to Europe and other markets, with April exports accounting for 29,563 units.
