Waymo Debuts Autonomous Robotaxi Service in Miami, Solidifying US Dominance
Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, officially unveiled its fully autonomous robotaxi service in Miami on Thursday, January 23, 2026. This marks the company’s sixth market and its first expansion for 2026. The service is now open to the public across a 60-square-mile area, encompassing some of Miami’s most iconic neighborhoods such as the Design District, Wynwood, Brickell, and Coral Gables.
With nearly 10,000 residents already on board, Waymo is continuously welcoming new riders. The company has plans in the pipeline to extend its services to Miami International Airport. This launch further solidifies Waymo’s lead in the autonomous vehicle market, outpacing competitors like Tesla and Amazon-owned Zoox.
Waymo’s co-CEO, Tekedra Mawakana, highlighted the company’s impressive safety record, stating that they have achieved “a ten-fold reduction in serious injury crashes” when compared to human drivers. The company is also conducting tests in several new U.S. markets, including Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando, with an ambitious plan to expand into 20 new markets in 2026. Waymo’s cutting-edge technology is designed to adapt to Miami’s unique environment, from the bright midday sun to sudden tropical downpours.
