US Airports Grapple with Over 1,400 Flight Delays Amid Holiday Season
During the peak holiday season, major airports across the United States are grappling with significant travel disruptions. Over 1,400 flight delays and 320 cancellations have left thousands of travelers stranded at key airports including New York’s JFK, LaGuardia, and Boston Logan.
LaGuardia Airport bore the brunt with 560 delays and 164 cancellations. Republic Airways was hit hardest, suffering 73 cancellations and 163 delays. JFK was no exception, with travelers facing immense delays across multiple airlines including JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines. Boston Logan International Airport saw Cape Air bear the brunt with 67 cancellations, while JetBlue, Republic Airlines, and Delta also reported hundreds of delayed flights.
The causes of these disruptions are manifold. From aircraft scheduling issues to overwhelming passenger volumes flying for the holidays, airports are struggling to keep up. Weather-related issues, including heavy fog and storms, have further exacerbated delays, particularly at airports like King Abdulaziz in Saudi Arabia. With significant traffic coming into these airports from various domestic and international locations, facilities are struggling to manage the influx.
Charleston International Airport is also bracing for a record-breaking holiday rush. It anticipates roughly 230,000 passengers during the holiday stretch, marking a 1 to 3 percent increase from last year. The airport remains on track to break records with an expected total of more than 6.1 million passengers served in 2025. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has acknowledged the disruption and is working with airlines to manage congestion.
