Honda Initiates Major Recall of Accord Hybrids Due to Critical Software Error

Honda Motor Co. has issued a significant recall of 256,603 Accord Hybrid vehicles from model years 2023-2025. This recall is due to a software programming error that could potentially cause a sudden loss of drive power while the vehicle is in operation.

The recall, administered through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, targets vehicles with a faulty integrated control module software. This software may reset unexpectedly during operation. The issue has been attributed to “improper software programming by a supplier”, which affects the vehicle’s central processing unit.

Despite the large number of vehicles recalled, Honda estimates that only 0.3% of these vehicles actually possess the defect. However, the company has received 832 warranty claims related to the issue as of November 6. Importantly, no injuries have been reported between December 2022 and October 2025, despite the potential safety risk.

Honda first became aware of the problem in March 2024 and conducted a thorough, year-long investigation before issuing the recall. Honda dealers will reprogram the affected vehicles’ software free of charge. The fix is currently available at service centers. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed starting January 5, 2026.

Owners who are affected can verify their vehicle’s inclusion in the recall by using Honda’s recall lookup tool or by contacting customer service at 1-888-234-2138. This recall underscores the growing concerns about software reliability in modern vehicles, as automakers increasingly rely on complex computer systems.
