Jeff Bezos Rejoins Leadership Ranks as Co-CEO of $6.2B AI Venture ‘Project Prometheus’

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is making a triumphant return to operational leadership for the first time since 2021. He’s stepping into the co-CEO role at his new artificial intelligence startup, Project Prometheus, a venture that has already secured a whopping $6.2 billion in funding.

The stealth-mode company, a joint venture with scientist Vik Bajaj, is dedicated to applying AI to engineering and manufacturing across a range of sectors, including computing, automotive, and aerospace. Bajaj, an alumnus of Google X and co-founder of Alphabet’s Verily, brings a wealth of experience in moonshot technologies to the table.

Project Prometheus has already attracted nearly 100 employees from leading AI companies. The list includes powerhouses like OpenAI, DeepMind, Meta, and Google. The startup’s massive funding round, partially backed by Bezos himself, makes it one of the most well-financed early-stage companies in the fiercely competitive AI landscape.

Interestingly, the venture appears to be closely tied to Bezos’s space ambitions through Blue Origin. Speaking at Italian Tech Week 2025, Bezos emphasized that “advanced robotics powered by AI will be needed for space exploration.” This suggests that Project Prometheus could play a pivotal role in his vision of millions of people living in space within decades. The company’s focus on physical AI applications aligns perfectly with Bezos’s broader goal of using robotics for lunar surface work and other space-based operations.

Elon Musk, another tech billionaire with interests in the AI space, responded to the announcement by calling Bezos a “copycat,” highlighting the intensifying rivalry between these tech titans.
