UK Residents File £1 Billion Lawsuit Against Johnson & Johnson Over Alleged Cancer-Linked Talc
Thousands of UK residents have taken a stand, filing a £1 billion ($1.34 billion) lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson. The claimants allege that the pharmaceutical giant knowingly sold baby powder contaminated with cancer-causing asbestos for decades.
The legal action was initiated at London’s High Court by KP Law. The firm represents more than 3,000 claimants who developed either ovarian cancer or mesothelioma after using Johnson’s Baby Powder between 1965 and 2023. The lawsuit alleges that J&J was aware as early as the 1960s that its talc-based products contained asbestos fibers, yet failed to warn consumers.
“The scale of Johnson & Johnson’s corporate wrongdoing is extraordinary,” said lawyer Tom Longstaff. One of the claimants, Janet Fuschillo, 75, used the powder for nearly 50 years before being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “I used talc on myself and all four of my children because we were told it was pure,” she said.
This case follows a recent Los Angeles jury award of $966 million to another family affected by J&J’s talc products. Despite the allegations, J&J has consistently denied them. A spokesperson for the current owner, Kenvue, stated that the products “did not contain asbestos, and do not cause cancer.”
