Global Tourism Set to Smash Records with US$7.8 Trillion in Spending
The world’s travel industry is on course for a historic milestone in 2026. The latest WTM Global Travel Report, released this week at WTM London in partnership with Tourism Economics, forecasts:
- 1.57 billion international overnight arrivals, up 2% from 2025
- US$7.8 trillion in total global visitor spending—including domestic and international travel—up 9%
- US$1.8 trillion in international visitor spending
Dave Goodger, Managing Director EMEA for Tourism Economics, noted that “leisure travel remains a key priority in consumer budgets,” even as travellers adapt by staying closer to home or becoming more selective with their spending.
The report highlights a growing shift toward shorter, regional trips. Intra-regional travel rose 3%, while long-haul travel dipped 3%. Africa and Oceania were standout performers, each recording an 8% rise in international arrivals.
The ultra-luxury travel segment was the fastest-growing globally, with spending increasing by 10–15%. Despite ongoing geopolitical conflicts and cost-of-living pressures, the industry remains remarkably resilient. Meanwhile, 22% of travellers are planning trips during off-peak periods to maximise value.
