Effective Strategies to Prevent Weight Regain After Discontinuing Ozempic

Millions of individuals discontinuing the use of popular GLP-1 weight-loss medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy often face the challenge of weight regain. However, a groundbreaking study published today on Medical News Today unveils two practical strategies that can significantly reduce weight regain post-medication.

The pilot randomized controlled trial, conducted by researchers at Tufts University and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and published in the journal Obesity Science and Practice, discovered that participants who received structured support post GLP-1 therapy experienced considerably less weight gain compared to those who received no additional assistance.

Specifically, those who utilized a digital wellness app regained merely 3.60% of their weight over a four-month period, and those receiving medically tailored meals (MTM) designed by a dietitian regained a mere 3.58%. This is in stark contrast to the alarming 10.75% weight regain observed in the unsupported control group.

On a monthly basis, the control group gained an average of 2.94% per month, while the two intervention groups each gained less than 1% per month. The researchers emphasized that structured support is particularly crucial during the first three to four months post-treatment, a period when most of the weight is typically regained.

Considering that an estimated 20–50% of patients discontinue GLP-1 therapy within a year, these findings provide a timely and accessible guide for long-term weight management.
