Waymo Secures $5B in Debt Financing, Boosting Total Funding to $26.5 Billion

Alphabet’s autonomous driving subsidiary, Waymo, has successfully locked in a colossal $5 billion debt funding round. The funding, provided by investment powerhouses Blackstone and PIMCO, was announced on October 8, 2026. This significant move has propelled the company’s total capital raised to an impressive $26.5 billion. The shift to debt financing from pure equity fundraising marks a critical transition in Waymo’s financial strategy, indicative of its maturation as a commercial enterprise.

Steve Fieler, Waymo’s CFO, characterized the debt raise as a crucial milestone in the company’s progression into a rapidly scaling commercial entity. This funding round comes on the heels of Waymo’s record-breaking $16 billion equity round in February 2026. This previous round, which post-money valued the robotaxi company at $126 billion, saw backing from notable investors such as Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global, Sequoia Capital, and Kleiner Perkins. Alphabet continues to be the majority investor.

Currently, Waymo holds the title as the unrivaled leader in the U.S. robotaxi market. It operates or is in the testing phase in 26 markets across the United States and internationally, having completed over 20 million trips. Alphabet’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, anticipates that Waymo will start making significant contributions to Alphabet’s financials by 2027. The newly acquired capital is intended to expedite fleet expansion and deployments in cities worldwide.
