Airbnb CEO Stands Firm as Meta’s AI Agent ‘Muse’ Disrupts Travel Industry

The global travel booking industry is facing one of its most significant disruptions in years as Meta Platforms’ new AI agent, Muse, threatens to cut traditional travel aggregators out of the booking equation entirely. Amidst this upheaval, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is not backing down.

Meta’s debut of Muse — an AI agent capable of searching, comparing, and completing bookings directly with airlines and hotels — sent shockwaves through Wall Street. Shares of Expedia (EXPE) plunged 7%, Airbnb (ABNB) dropped 6%, and Booking Holdings (BKNG) sank 5%. Investors feared the commission-based aggregator model could be rendered obsolete. Meanwhile, Meta stock rose 2%.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has taken a defiant stance. He stated he would not open Airbnb’s platform to outside AI agents, arguing that “planning travel is entertainment” and Muse-style tools often overlook the unique, exclusive listings that make Airbnb irreplaceable. Chesky’s position is that Airbnb’s differentiated inventory — unavailable on other platforms — is its most potent defense against AI disintermediation.

As of October 12, 2026, the debate continues to pressure travel sector stocks and investor sentiment. Goldman Sachs has warned that AI agents will broadly disrupt industries built on middleman fees, making this one of the most-watched stories in travel and tech this autumn.
