Hurricane Simon Strikes Puerto Vallarta: Airport Shutdown and Tourism Disruption

Hurricane Simon, a formidable Category 3 storm, is currently wreaking havoc on Mexico’s Pacific coast, significantly impacting one of the country’s most cherished tourist hotspots. As of Monday, October 12, the international airport in Puerto Vallarta remains closed, with flights cancelled and thousands of tourists and residents seeking shelter as the storm’s eye ominously hovers just offshore.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami has reported maximum sustained winds of 115 mph — slightly above the 111 mph threshold for a Category 3 storm. The storm is expected to maintain its dangerous intensity through midweek before moving inland across west-central Mexico and rapidly weakening. The warning zone extends from Punta San Telmo to Punta Mita, including the resort city of Puerto Vallarta and the port of Manzanillo.

The state of Jalisco has suspended classes in 22 coastal municipalities and initiated evacuations in areas at risk. Along Puerto Vallarta’s renowned Malecón boardwalk, hotels and businesses have boarded up their windows, while National Guard vehicles patrol the nearly deserted streets. Airlines, including Delta, have issued travel waivers, allowing passengers to rebook flights to and from Puerto Vallarta (PVR) and Guadalajara (GDL) without incurring extra costs.

Tourism authorities are urging visitors to remain in designated shelters or safe zones. Meanwhile, the broader hospitality sector across Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Nayarit is bracing for the storm’s full economic impact.
