AI-Powered App Revolutionizes Acne Treatment — No Doctor’s Approval Required
In an unprecedented development in healthcare and beauty tech, New York-based Nolla Health has unveiled the first AI-authorized prescription service in the United States. The Nolla Derm app is now providing initial topical acne prescriptions to Utah residents aged 18 and older — entirely without a doctor’s direct approval — for a mere $4.99 per month.
This pilot program, sanctioned by the Utah Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy and enacted on September 22, 2026, is being celebrated as a historic milestone. Users merely download the app, fill out a brief intake questionnaire, and perform a five-angle face scan. In just 10 to 15 minutes, the AI formulates a personalized treatment plan and, if suitable, issues a prescription — all without the need for an office visit.
The program is restricted to patients with mild to moderate acne. Those with severe or complex conditions are referred to a licensed physician. Nolla assures that patients can also communicate with a licensed doctor through the app at any time at no additional cost. The company highlights a glaring access gap: in Utah, approximately 100,000 people have active acne at any given time, yet only 10% ever consult a dermatologist, with average appointment wait times of 61 days.
“AI will have the most significant impact in healthcare when it enables people to receive care they otherwise would not have,” stated Luis Wenus, co-founder and CEO of Nolla Health. This initiative sets a precedent that could transform how millions of Americans access dermatological care in the future.
