SpaceX’s $8B Spectrum Acquisition Triggers Market Turmoil for AT&T, Verizon & T-Mobile

In a monumental shift in the U.S. telecom industry, SpaceX has unveiled plans to acquire a nationwide portfolio of up to 14 megahertz of paired 800 MHz spectrum licenses from investment firm Grain Management. The deal, valued at approximately $8 billion, triggered a harsh market reaction against established carriers.

Following the announcement, Verizon saw a decrease of 8.75%, marking its worst trading day since July 2002. AT&T experienced a sharp fall of 9.81% to $22.17, its steepest drop since 2000. Meanwhile, T-Mobile lost a staggering 13.27%. Collectively, the three carriers witnessed a loss of roughly $39 billion in combined market value — nearly five times the amount SpaceX invested in the spectrum.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, stated that the acquisition was “the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America.” The newly acquired low-band spectrum, pending clearance by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), would enable SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile service to penetrate buildings and eliminate rural dead zones. These capabilities could potentially position SpaceX as America’s fourth major wireless carrier. FCC Chair Brendan Carr lauded the move, labeling it as “really good news for the American consumer.”
