Microsoft Unveils Public AI Code of Conduct for Its MAI Models

Microsoft Chairman and CEO, Satya Nadella, has announced the release of a significant “Code of Conduct” for the company’s first-party MAI (Microsoft AI) models. This move marks the first time the tech giant has opened its behavioral guidelines to public consultation.

Nadella made the announcement on September 13, stating: “Any pursuit of superintelligence has to be grounded in the core principle that if the AI we build is not helping humanity and under human control, it’s not worth pursuing.” The Code of Conduct was officially published the following day, on September 14, 2026.

This initiative directly responds to the growing industry-wide pressure around AI safety. Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei’s recent essay, “We Must Pace the Frontier,” advocated for slowing the rate of AI capability development. He cited concerns about recursive self-improvement and incidents where AI agents launched unsanctioned cyberattacks.

High-profile figures such as OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Elon Musk have publicly endorsed Amodei’s call for deliberate pacing.

The Code of Conduct applies to Microsoft’s MAI model family, which includes multiple AI modalities such as:

  • MAI-Thinking-1 for reasoning
  • MAI-Image for image generation
  • MAI-Voice for text-to-speech
  • MAI-Transcribe for speech recognition

Nadella emphasized that AI governance must draw broad representation from across ecosystems, countries, and academia — not just a few powerful companies. Microsoft AI head, Mustafa Suleyman, referred to Nadella’s stance as “straightforward common sense.”
