Revolutionary Sunscreen with Newly FDA-Approved Filter Now Available in the US
In a landmark moment for skincare, Australian cult brand Ultra Violette has unveiled its Unblock Screen™ SPF 50 Breakout-Friendly SkinScreen. This is the first sunscreen to be sold in the United States that contains the newly FDA-approved filter, Bemotrizinol (BEMT). The product was made available online on August 31, 2026, and will hit Sephora stores from October 2, 2026, retailing at $40.
This development signifies a turning point in American sun care. Bemotrizinol is the first new sunscreen filter to receive FDA clearance in over 25 years. It was added to the OTC sunscreen monograph on June 9, 2026, at concentrations of up to 6%. Unlike its predecessors, BEMT is a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB filter that is photostable, effective at lower concentrations, and does not absorb into the bloodstream. The outcome is a lightweight, non-whitening formula that is a much-anticipated improvement for sensitive and acne-prone skin types.
Co-founder of Ultra Violette, Bec Jefferd, revealed that the brand was primed to move swiftly, stating: “We have developed products using BEMT in our global range for close to 10 years.” Unblock Screen, which is formulated for oily and acne-prone skin with oil-control and hydration actives, is now available at ultraviolettespf.com and Sephora.com. A second BEMT-infused product, Fave Screen™ SPF 50, is slated for launch in January 2027.
