FAA Approves Swift Fuels 100R Unleaded Avgas for Over 1,600 Aircraft Models
In a significant move towards eradicating leaded aviation gasoline in U.S. airspace, the FAA has broadened the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for Swift Fuels’ 100R unleaded avgas. This expansion adds over 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models to its Approved Model List (AML).
The recently approved aircraft, which include models from various manufacturers, collectively represent approximately 56% of all 100LL avgas consumed in the U.S. The certification process was managed by the FAA’s Central Certification Branch and includes engines from more than 80 manufacturers, all adhering to ASTM International fuel specification D8603.

Swift Fuels, headquartered in West Lafayette, Indiana, refers to this as Phase I of its comprehensive unleaded transition plan. The company anticipates Phase II and Phase III approvals, targeting higher-performance engines, to be granted by 2028. It’s worth noting that 100R is currently the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas approved under FAA STCs that also meets the ASTM D8603 production specification. Pilots who previously purchased a UL94 STC from Swift Fuels will automatically receive the 100R STC at no additional cost.
