Naples Airport Embraces Innovation with Automated Weather Broadcasts for Pilots
Naples Airport (APF), a bustling general aviation hub in Florida, has made a remarkable advancement in its operational technology. The airport now utilizes the Frequentis smartATIS system, replacing the traditional manual method of recording hourly ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) broadcasts with a fully automated, real-time solution.
This cutting-edge system generates audio broadcasts that feature real-time weather data, sourced directly from the Airport Surface Observing System (ASOS). Additionally, air traffic controllers can input operational updates such as runway configurations, taxiway closures, construction activities, and wildlife advisories. These updates are then instantly incorporated into the broadcast heard by all arriving and departing pilots.
In the past, Naples controllers had to manually record new ATIS messages every hour. This upgrade ensures pilots always receive the most current and accurate information before contacting the tower. This not only reduces radio frequency congestion but also lightens the controller workload. “By automating the routine ATIS updates, smartATIS helps controllers focus on aircraft operations while ensuring pilots receive accurate, timely information,” stated Stefan Galler, Vice President at Frequentis USA. This initiative is seen as a blueprint for other busy general aviation airports nationwide.
