Summer Travel Disrupted by Rampant Wildfires Across Southern Europe
Millions of summer vacationers heading to Southern Europe are facing travel disruptions this August. A devastating wildfire season is sweeping across the region during its busiest tourism period of the year.
Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Germany are all battling intense blazes. These are driven by extreme summer heat and prolonged drought conditions. Both Portugal and Spain have reported more than twice as many active wildfires in 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. This data is according to health and safety officials. In France alone, over 220,000 people have been evacuated. This includes tourists from coastal resort zones near Bordeaux.
The fires have caused temporary flight delays due to smoke reducing visibility. Other disruptions include transportation detours, road closures, and the shuttering of hiking trails, national parks, and archaeological sites. Hotels in affected regions have assisted evacuated guests. Major tour operators, including G Adventures and Uniworld river cruises, have made precautionary adjustments to itineraries.
Climate experts warn that Southern Europe’s wildfire season is growing longer and more intense. This is due to rising temperatures and prolonged drought. Travellers with bookings to popular destinations such as Crete, Rhodes, Catalonia, Andalusia, and Portugal’s Algarve are being urged to check with airlines and accommodation providers before departure.
Authorities stress that most of each affected country remains open to visitors. Travellers should remain flexible and follow local emergency instructions.
