Finding Your Sleep Sweet Spot: How 6.4–7.8 Hours of Sleep Can Slow Down Aging
A groundbreaking study released today in Nature, and spotlighted by Columbia University Irving Medical Center, verifies a long-held belief by wellness experts: the duration of your nightly sleep could be directly influencing the aging of your body, organ by organ.
Researchers from the MULTI Consortium scrutinized data from half a million participants in the UK Biobank. They utilized 23 biological aging clocks that spanned 17 organ systems — ranging from the brain and heart to metabolic and immune tissues. The research uncovered a distinct U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and biological age. Both insufficient sleep (under 6 hours) and excessive sleep (over 8 hours) were linked with noticeably accelerated aging in almost every organ of the body.
The study pinpointed the “sweet spot” for the slowest biological aging to be between 6.4 and 7.8 hours of sleep per night. Interestingly, women required slightly more sleep than men to achieve the lowest biological age in certain categories — for instance, the brain’s proteomic clock indicated an optimum of 7.82 hours for women as opposed to 7.70 hours for men. The study also connected abnormal sleep duration with an elevated risk of late-life depression, migraines, and diabetes.
“Sleep is not merely a brain-centered activity,” the researchers emphasized. They described it as a crucial element in maintaining a synchronized brain-body network that affects metabolic equilibrium and immune health across 17 organ systems. Experts believe these findings position sleep as a potent, modifiable lifestyle target for promoting healthy aging.
