YouTube Redefines View Count: Every Frame Counts from the Start

As of August 24, 2026, YouTube has redefined its view count methodology. The new rule states that a view is recorded the moment a video starts playing, right from the first frame, with no minimum watch time required.

This significant change applies to all video formats globally, including long-form videos, live streams, podcasts, and Shorts. Previously, a view on long-form videos was counted after approximately 30 seconds of watch time. This old rule often led to frustration among creators and confusion among marketers. With this update, YouTube’s view count policy aligns with that of TikTok and Instagram.

Creators should brace themselves for a noticeable surge in their public view counts. However, YouTube has clarified that earnings and YouTube Partner Program eligibility will remain unaffected. The monetization will continue to be regulated by a new metric called “Engaged Views”, which can be found under YouTube Analytics > Advanced Mode. This metric tracks viewers who watch beyond the initial seconds. The new rule will not affect the existing counts of older videos; it applies only to future plays.

This update comes a week after YouTube raised the eligibility criteria for its Partner Program. Now, creators need to have 8,000 qualified watch hours over the past year (up from 4,000) or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days (up from 10 million). These changes have already sparked significant backlash from creators.
