Boost Your Heart Health by 39%: Choose Stairs Over Elevators

A groundbreaking study published on August 14, 2026, unveils a simple yet powerful habit for heart health that costs nothing and requires no gym equipment — taking the stairs.

The research, conducted by the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and published in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs, scrutinized data from over 480,000 individuals across nine high-quality studies, spanning a median period of 14 years. The results are compelling: regular stair climbers were 39% less likely to succumb to cardiovascular disease and 24% less likely to die from any cause compared to those who seldom used stairs. The study also revealed lower risks of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure among participants.

“Encouraging people to take the stairs in workplaces, public buildings, and homes could form part of a wider strategy to reduce cardiovascular disease at the population level,” stated Professor Vassilios Vassiliou of UEA’s Norwich Medical School.

With over a quarter of adults worldwide not meeting recommended physical activity levels, researchers propose stair climbing — even as few as 6 flights per day — as a practical, low-barrier step towards improved heart health. The study included both healthy adults and those with prior heart conditions, with ages ranging from 35 to 84.
