Fatal Beechcraft Baron Crash: A Stark Reminder of the Dangers of Datalink Weather Latency

The AOPA Air Safety Institute has recently published a preliminary analysis of a fatal Beechcraft Baron crash that occurred in July 2026 near Waterloo, Illinois. This tragic event has brought to light one of the most dangerous and misunderstood hazards in general aviation: the latency of datalink weather.

The aircraft involved in the accident was N202DK, a 1978 Beechcraft Baron 55. The pilots were Jimmy Don Lewis and his adult son Brayden Ty Lewis, both of whom were certificated private pilots, but neither held an instrument rating. The two had attended a major league baseball game in St. Louis and departed from St. Louis Regional Airport (KALN) at approximately 10:30 p.m., heading for Siloam Springs-Smith Field (KSLG) in Arkansas, a distance of roughly 270 nautical miles southwest. A mere 18 minutes post takeoff, at 10:48 p.m., the aircraft crashed south of St. Louis Lambert International Airport’s Class Bravo airspace.

ASI Senior Vice President Mike Ginter suggested that the crew might have been relying on an onboard datalink weather display, oblivious to the fact that such systems usually have a 3-to-20-minute delay. This delay can make the weather information in the cockpit dangerously outdated. Both the FAA and ASI advise pilots to maintain at least a 20 nautical miles lateral distance from thunderstorm cells and to never attempt to navigate between them.

“The aircraft appears to have flown into some severe weather,” Ginter commented. The NTSB investigation is still in progress.
