Over 50 Cleveland Leaders Advocate for Burke Lakefront Airport Preservation
A coalition of over 50 influential figures from the Cleveland area, including business leaders, educators, and civic voices, have penned letters to the Cleveland City Council. Their collective plea urges the council to reject Mayor Justin Bibb’s proposal to close Burke Lakefront Airport (BKL). They are also demanding a fair public hearing for aviation advocates who have not yet had the opportunity to voice their concerns.
The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) expressed support for this initiative on August 5, 2026. NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen referred to the airport as “an indispensable economic engine.” Supporters contend that BKL plays a vital role in Cleveland’s regional connectivity, workforce development, and economic prosperity. They highlight that since the beginning of 2026, the city council has conducted four hearings that solely featured closure advocates. There has been no dedicated forum for airport stakeholders, operators, or aviation businesses.
Mayor Bibb has plans to close and redevelop the 450-acre lakefront site. His vision includes potential sports facilities, parks, and mixed-use development. However, a full closure would necessitate either an act of Congress or FAA approval. This is due to the city’s acceptance of federal and state grants, which obligate it to keep the airport operational until the late 2030s. Organizations such as the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), NBAA, and the Lakefront Airport Preservation Partnership (LAPP) are pushing back. They warn that closure would not only end the beloved Cleveland National Air Show but also eliminate crucial medical evacuation access.
