FAA Approves Over 1,600 Aircraft Models for Swift 100R Unleaded Avgas
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — August 5, 2026 — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has taken a significant step towards the elimination of leaded fuel from general aviation. It has expanded approval for Swift Fuels’ 100R unleaded aviation gasoline, adding over 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models to its Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) Approved Model List.
The expansion, announced on July 14, 2026, covers engines and airframes from major manufacturers such as:
- Lycoming (~395 models)
- Continental (~195 models)
- Curtiss Wright (95 models)
- Pratt & Whitney (95 models)
It also includes aircraft from Textron/Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, Mooney, Grumman, and many others. These represent aircraft that consume approximately 56% of all 100LL avgas currently used in the United States.
Swift Fuels confirmed that this is Phase I of its broader transition plan. Higher-performance engine and airframe approvals are expected through Phase II and Phase III programs running into early 2028. The 100R fuel is currently the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas approved under FAA STCs and compliant with ASTM International’s D8603 production specification.
Pilots whose aircraft appear on the approved model list can obtain a Swift Fuels STC for a one-time fee of $100 per aircraft. The fuel is already being sold commercially at five U.S. and five European locations, with dozens more airfields deploying the product in the coming weeks.
The FAA’s initiative is part of the U.S. government’s mandate to transition the entire general aviation fleet to unleaded gasoline by the end of 2030.
