Google Cancels AI Studio App Despite 800K Preorders, Shifts Focus to Gemini
In an unexpected strategic shift, Google has officially pulled the plug on its highly anticipated AI Studio mobile app for iOS and Android. This comes despite the app amassing over 800,000 preorders since its preview at Google I/O 2026. The app, which was intended to enable developers and enthusiasts to capture ideas on the move and create working prototypes, will not be launched as a standalone product.
Google has decided to forgo the route of asking users to download another app. Instead, it has announced an “entirely different approach”. This new strategy involves integrating app-creation capabilities within users’ everyday interactions in the Gemini app, available on both mobile and desktop platforms. Over the past year, the Gemini app has transformed from a basic chatbot into a robust assistant capable of writing code, generating images, conducting research, and managing complex multi-step tasks.
For developers who use AI Studio in their browser, Google assures that the web-based version at aistudio.google.com will remain active and continue to receive investment. This move indicates Google’s intention to unify its AI experience under the Gemini umbrella, rather than dispersing it across multiple products. Whether existing preorder users find this trade-off acceptable is yet to be determined.
