Qualcomm Announces Significant Chip Price Increase — Expect Higher Smartphone Prices
Smartphone shoppers, brace yourselves: Qualcomm, the industry leader in Snapdragon chipsets, has officially announced a double-digit percentage price increase on all products shipped after September 1, 2026. This news, initially reported by Bloomberg and later confirmed by Qualcomm via a statement cited by CNBC, is causing a stir throughout the consumer electronics supply chain.
Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm’s CEO, was straightforward about the reasons behind the price hike. He stated that due to a broad-based rise in input costs across wafer fabrication, assembly, testing, advanced packaging, and memory, the company can no longer absorb these costs for its customers. The massive surge in AI data center construction has consumed vast amounts of the same semiconductor and memory components that power consumer devices, leading to a supply squeeze and price increase.
The ripple effects of this price hike are already apparent. Samsung has increased the prices of its Galaxy Z8 foldable lineup by up to $100 per device, and the upcoming Pixel 11 series from Google is expected to launch at higher price points than its predecessor. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips power a significant portion of the Android ecosystem — from Samsung Galaxy flagships to OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Oppo devices — which means consumers across all price tiers are likely to feel the impact as we move into 2027.
