Domestic Travel in the US Soars by 34% as Americans Opt for Local Vacations
This summer, a striking number of Americans are favoring vacations closer to home. JustFly data published in July 2026 reveals a surge in domestic travel search demand of over 34% year on year, while international flight searches have seen a decline of 17.4% compared to the same period last year.
The shift is attributed to a potent mix of rising international airfares and geopolitical uncertainty. European routes have seen an approximate increase of 20% year on year. On the other hand, domestic fares have seen a more manageable increase of 10–15%.
Cities such as Washington D.C., Las Vegas, New York, Denver, Boston, and Seattle are witnessing the largest gains in domestic search volume. Las Vegas alone has seen an 18% rise in flight interest compared to 2025, driven by new residencies at The Sphere and major entertainment events.
This trend is in line with broader summer 2026 data. Deloitte’s Summer Travel Survey found July to be the busiest month for summer travel, accounting for 31% of all planned summer trips. AAA projected a record 72.2 million Americans would travel at least 50 miles from home over the July 4th holiday window, surpassing last year’s record of 71.8 million. Booking.com reports that domestic accommodation searches are up 21% and domestic flight searches are up 29% year on year. A survey by Experian reveals that two-thirds of Americans find travel less affordable this summer compared to 2025, yet 43% are still planning a domestic road trip.
