FAA Introduces Mobile Clearance: Simplifying IFR Departures with a Single Tap
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is revolutionizing the way general aviation pilots receive departure clearances. A pioneering digital tool, Mobile Clearance, was introduced by FAA Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh on July 23, 2026. This system enables pilots to request and receive IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) departure clearances directly through popular aviation apps, ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot, without the need for a radio or phone.
With the new system, air traffic control delivers the clearance as a text message within the app. This provides pilots with a written record to review before accepting it with a digital “WILCO” response. The FAA believes this will significantly reduce radio congestion and verbal readback errors that currently affect more than 44,000 daily IFR departures across the U.S. Over half of these are currently managed by voice. Garmin developed its Mobile Clearance Delivery feature in partnership with the FAA and MITRE. This feature is available to Garmin Pilot Premium subscribers on iOS devices.
The system is currently operational at five test airports, including Sugar Land Regional (KSGR), Appleton International (KATW), and New Century AirCenter (KIXD). The FAA intends to extend testing to Kansas City and Austin in early Fall 2026. A nationwide rollout is planned for 2028. Starting in August, pilots will also have the ability to cancel IFR clearances digitally through the apps.
