Anthropic Outperforms OpenAI with a $30B Annual Revenue
In a surprising turn of events that has left the AI industry astounded, Anthropic — the creator of the Claude AI assistant — has surpassed OpenAI in annual revenue, achieving a $30 billion run rate as of early April 2026, in contrast to OpenAI’s estimated $24–$25 billion.
The ascent of Anthropic has been nothing short of phenomenal. The company’s annual recurring revenue was a mere $1 billion in January 2025, escalated to $9 billion by the end of the year, and then soared to $30 billion in just four additional months — a 30x surge in under 15 months. The primary catalyst? A relentless focus on enterprise customers, with over 300,000 businesses now utilizing Claude tools. Of particular note, Claude Code, the company’s AI coding tool, has almost reached $1 billion in annualized revenue since its inception.
The strategic divergence with OpenAI is evident. While OpenAI’s growth has been largely fueled by its consumer product ChatGPT, Anthropic has focused on API usage by large enterprises integrating Claude into their own products and workflows. Business clients now represent approximately 80% of Anthropic’s total revenue. Following its February 2026 Series G round, which valued the company at $380 billion, Anthropic is also contemplating a potential IPO as early as October 2026.
