OpenAI Boosts Codex AI Coding Platform with Astral Acquisition

OpenAI, in a recent announcement, revealed its acquisition of Astral. Astral is the startup responsible for three of the most popular open-source Python developer tools: uv (a high-speed package manager with 126 million monthly downloads), Ruff (a Python linter and code formatter with 179 million monthly downloads), and ty (a type checker). These tools, built in Rust, offer a significant speed advantage over older Python-based alternatives.

This acquisition is set to supercharge Codex, OpenAI’s AI-powered coding platform. Codex already has an impressive 2 million weekly active users, marking a threefold increase in users and a fivefold increase in usage since January 2026. OpenAI’s integration of Astral’s infrastructure tools directly into Codex aims to take AI coding beyond mere code generation. It will enable agents to autonomously plan changes, modify codebases, run tests, and maintain software over time.

Upon regulatory approval, the Astral engineering team will merge with OpenAI’s Codex division. OpenAI has committed to continue supporting Astral’s open-source products post-acquisition. This is a crucial point for the vast developer community that relies on these tools daily. The move positions OpenAI in more direct competition with Anthropic’s Claude Code and Cursor in the rapidly expanding AI developer tools market. The financial details of the deal remain undisclosed.
