Revolutionizing Solo Cockpit Piloting: The SkyHound ADS-B Device
A Connecticut-based aviation startup is making waves in the GA avionics market with a groundbreaking product. Hound Avionics, a company established by pilots and engineers, has launched the SkyHound — touted as the world’s first truly integrated, portable, subscription-free ADS-B In traffic and weather display designed for general aviation cockpits.
Breaking away from conventional portable ADS-B options that necessitate a separate tablet, Bluetooth connection, or paid EFB software subscription, the SkyHound is a fully self-contained unit with an inbuilt display. The brainchild of co-founder Sholom Ellenberg, the device was created in response to the absence of a similar product in the market. The unit requires only external power — no internal battery — a feature that allowed Hound Avionics to submit it for FAA NORSEE (Non-Required Safety Enhancing Equipment) approval. The approval could be granted as early as the upcoming AirVenture Oshkosh event this summer.
Designed to sit on the glareshield, the SkyHound powers on instantly, displaying live traffic and weather data without the need for any app configuration. The device is currently scheduled to begin shipping in July 2026. Hound Avionics also plans to showcase the SkyHound at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, offering a special introductory price for attendees.
Industry observers suggest that the SkyHound could signify a new direction for portable cockpit safety equipment, particularly appealing to pilots who prefer to fly without an iPad.
