Tripadvisor has recently unveiled its much-awaited Summer Travel Index for 2026. The data reveals a notable trend among American travelers favoring East Coast beach destinations. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has emerged as the premier domestic summer travel hotspot for U.S. travelers.
The extensive data, gathered from Tripadvisor platform searches conducted from February 1 to April 10, 2026, for travel dates spanning June to August 2026, indicates a marked preference for accessible coastal destinations with family-friendly appeal. Myrtle Beach leads the pack, followed by New York City, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Ocean City, Maryland.
On the international front, Cancun retains its title as the most coveted summer destination for the third year running. Known for its world-class diving and snorkeling experiences, and its close proximity to iconic cultural heritage sites, Cancun continues to attract travelers worldwide. Paris and London complete the top three international destinations, reflecting a robust demand for European cultural hubs.
“These accessible coastal destinations offer family-friendly appeal and activities that cater to travelers of all ages, from water parks and beach activities to cultural attractions and local entertainment,” the report states. Fast-growing domestic destinations include Orlando and Longboat Key, while international trending picks feature Green Island, Jamaica, and Kyushu, Japan.
The report also highlights that cultural tours and heritage experiences have emerged as the most popular booked experiences among U.S. travelers. These are closely followed by outdoor activities and adventure tours that allow exploration in unique ways.
