Waymo Secures $16B in Funding, Skyrocketing Valuation to $126B

Alphabet’s autonomous driving venture, Waymo, has successfully completed an impressive $16 billion funding round. This has catapulted the valuation of the robotaxi trailblazer to an astounding $126 billion, more than doubling its previous valuation of $45 billion from October 2024. The colossal influx of capital was spearheaded by Alphabet, with a notable roster of investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Kleiner Perkins, Silver Lake, Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, Tiger Global, and newcomers Dragoneer Investment Group and DST Global.

With this fresh capital, Waymo plans to extend its autonomous ride-hailing service to 11 more U.S. cities in 2026, including Detroit, Washington D.C., Dallas, and Las Vegas. This expansion is part of Waymo’s strategy to solidify its dominance in the robotaxi industry. Alphabet’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, anticipates that Waymo will start making a “meaningful” impact on Alphabet’s financials by 2027. This funding round highlights Wall Street’s increasing belief in the imminent mass commercial viability of autonomous vehicles.
