Qantas Set to Pioneer Nonstop Sydney–New York Flights in 2028
In a groundbreaking development for global aviation and travellers, Qantas has announced the launch of the world’s first-ever nonstop commercial flights between Sydney and New York. This ambitious venture, part of the Project Sunrise programme, is set to commence in mid-2028. The approximately 18-hour flight will shave off more than three hours from the current fastest travel time, which necessitates a stopover in Auckland. For the first time in history, Australia’s east coast will be connected to New York without a layover.
The service will employ specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft. Each aircraft, equipped with an additional 20,000-litre fuel tank, will be capable of nonstop flights spanning over 16,000 kilometres and up to 22 hours. Qantas has placed an order for 12 of these aircraft, with the first delivery anticipated in April 2027. Each plane will accommodate 238 passengers across four cabins — first, business, premium economy, and economy. To help combat jet lag on the ultra-long-haul journey, dedicated wellbeing zones will be featured on the aircraft.
New York is the second confirmed destination under Project Sunrise, following nonstop Sydney–London services slated to start in October 2027. Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson hailed the route as a “defining moment” for Australia-US connectivity. The demand for the route is robust, with Qantas reporting that bookings in and out of New York have nearly doubled since 2023. Furthermore, the intent to book ultra-long-haul flights has surged from 58% to 70% among travellers this year alone. Tickets will be available for sale in August 2027.
