Discover the Bedtime Beauty Secret from Japan: Hinoki Cypress Oil
Beauty sleep has just been naturally upgraded. Researchers from Kyushu University in Japan have discovered that inhaling a few drops of essential oil derived from the roots of the Hinoki tree (Chamaecyparis obtusa), also known as Japanese cypress, can significantly enhance sleep quality. This breakthrough is creating a stir in both the wellness and beauty industries.
The pilot study, published on September 1, 2026, in the Journal of Wood Science, involved 12 women aged between 35 and 60. The two-week, single-blind crossover home experiment required participants to place just three drops of Hinoki root essential oil in a paper cup, inhale the scent for 10 seconds, and position the cup approximately 30 cm from their nose while sleeping.
The results were promising. Participants experienced fewer nighttime awakenings, felt more refreshed and alert the following morning, and exhibited brain-wave activity indicative of a smoother transition into deeper sleep, including increased delta-wave activity.
The research, led by Associate Professor Kuniyoshi Shimizu of Kyushu University’s Faculty of Agriculture, also revealed a sustainable advantage. Hinoki roots are often discarded as waste after logging, suggesting that the oil could represent a high-value use of a forestry byproduct. While larger studies are necessary before any clinical conclusions can be made, the findings position Hinoki root essential oil as a promising, natural addition to any evening beauty and wellness routine.
