Venice Considers Hefty Day-Tripper Fee to Curb Overtourism by 2027

Venice is contemplating a significant hike in its tourist entry fee. City officials are proposing to escalate the day-tripper access charge from the existing €5–€10 to a staggering €30 per person. On peak days, this fee could even reach €50, starting in 2027. The proposal, put forth by Venice’s budget and taxation councillor Michele Zuin, also suggests extending the charge application period beyond its current seasonal window.

The city pioneered the day-tripper fee in 2024, becoming the first city globally to levy entry fees on short-term visitors. In 2026, the scheme was operational across 60 designated days between April and July, generating over €5.2 million in revenue. The average paid day-visitor numbers dwindled to approximately 11,300 per day, a decrease from 16,700 in 2024. The overwhelming days of 20,000+ visitors dropped from four to just one.

Despite these gains, Zuin contends that the current charge is “affordable for virtually everyone” and risks losing its deterrent effect. Venice’s new mayor, Simone Venturini, advocates for a dynamic pricing model where the fee escalates in tandem with demand on the busiest days. Any final increase would necessitate approval from the Italian national government and Parliament, meaning the 2027 pricing remains a topic of negotiation.
