Explora Journeys: A Bold Leap into the River Cruise Market with Dutch Shipbuilder Partnership
Luxury cruise brand Explora Journeys, the premium division of the MSC Group, has embarked on a historic expansion. The brand has signed a Letter of Intent with the esteemed Dutch shipbuilder, Den Breejen Shipyard. This partnership marks the beginning of the construction of its first fleet of luxury river cruise ships, extending the brand’s presence beyond the open ocean.
This groundbreaking agreement was announced on 24 September 2026. It signifies Explora Journeys’ strategic entry into Europe’s fiercely competitive river cruise segment. The brand aims to infuse its unique Ocean State of Mind philosophy into Europe’s most iconic inland waterways. This philosophy harmoniously blends the liberty of sea travel with the sophistication of European hospitality and design.
Sales for these new river voyages are projected to commence in 2027. However, details regarding delivery schedules, ship design, capacity, and initial itineraries remain under wraps.
Den Breejen Shipyard is a seasoned player in the sector, with a portfolio boasting vessels built for Avalon Waterways, Scenic, and Emerald Cruises. This collaboration positions Explora Journeys to rival established river cruise operators such as Viking, Uniworld, and AmaWaterways.
Simultaneously, Explora’s ocean fleet continues to flourish. Explora III — the first LNG-powered ship in its fleet — is already navigating the seas, with three more ocean ships (Explora IV, V, and VI) slated for launch by 2028.
