Japan Reclaims Title as World’s Top Tourism Destination in 2026 WEF Index
Japan has ascended to the pinnacle of the World Economic Forum’s 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI). This achievement marks a significant leap from its 2024 standing, reinstating Japan to the number-one position it previously held in 2021. The TTDI, a collaborative effort with Zurich Insurance Group, scrutinizes 110 economies across 17 key areas such as infrastructure, air connectivity, cultural resources, sustainability, and visitor services.
The rise of Japan to the top is attributed to its comprehensive transport networks, robust cultural and natural resources, and the successful diversion of tourism from congested hubs like Tokyo and Kyoto to less frequented regions. The top five rankings are as follows:
- Japan
- United States
- Spain
- Australia
- France
Completing the top 10 are Germany, the UK, China, Switzerland, and Italy.
The WEF report underscored that 101 out of 110 economies enhanced their scores between 2024 and 2026 — the most rapid average improvement since 2019, at 2.1%. Despite this, the report cautioned about enduring challenges: escalating travel costs, labor shortages, and sustainability pressures pose a threat to the balance between record demand and enduring value for local communities.
Among emerging markets, India distinguished itself by climbing nine places to rank 31st. This leap was propelled by enhancements in cultural assets, natural attractions, and tourism infrastructure.
