Bayer Pledges $2.2B for New Drug Plant in Ohio Amid US Tariff Tensions

German pharmaceutical titan, Bayer AG, has unveiled plans for a monumental $2.2 billion investment in the construction of a cutting-edge drug manufacturing facility in New Albany, Ohio. This investment marks one of the most significant single pharmaceutical investments in the state’s history. The announcement was made on Friday, October 2, 2026, in conjunction with Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and economic development agency JobsOhio.

The innovative, modular campus is set to produce medicines focused on oncology, cardiovascular, and renal diseases. Key products will include the kidney disease medication Kerendia, the prostate cancer treatment Nubeqa, and the stroke-prevention candidate asundexian. The first module, dedicated to drug substance manufacturing, is slated to become operational in 2031, followed by a finished drug product module in 2034.

This investment is anticipated to generate roughly 600 high-value permanent jobs and approximately 1,500 construction jobs within the New Albany International Business Park. Bayer’s CEO, Bill Anderson, noted that the U.S. represents the company’s fastest-growing pharmaceuticals market. This initiative adds to the over $7 billion that Bayer has invested in U.S. pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing in the past five years. The move comes at a time when European drug manufacturers are facing increasing pressure from the Trump administration to enhance domestic production and lower drug prices.
