FAA Approves Garmin Autoland for Epic E1000 AX Turboprop

In a significant advancement for general aviation safety, Epic Aircraft has been granted FAA certification for the Garmin Emergency Autoland system on its E1000 AX single-engine turboprop. This certification implies that passengers aboard the all-carbon-fiber, six-seat aircraft can now initiate an emergency landing with the mere push of a button — no pilot skills necessary.

Setting itself apart from other aircraft in its class, the E1000 AX is equipped with multiple Autoland activation buttons strategically placed throughout the cabin. This design puts potentially lifesaving technology within arm’s reach of every passenger. Furthermore, the system can engage automatically if it detects the pilot is incapacitated.

Once activated, the Garmin Autoland system performs a series of tasks autonomously. It evaluates nearby airports based on factors such as runway length, distance, terrain, weather, and remaining fuel. After selecting the most suitable option, it communicates with air traffic control and lands the aircraft. Remarkably, it brings the aircraft to a complete stop and shuts down the engine entirely without any human input.

Fully integrated with the Garmin G1000 NXi avionics suite and working in tandem with Garmin Autothrottle, this system represents the pinnacle of autonomous emergency flight management in general aviation. The E1000 AX boasts a maximum cruise speed of 333 KTAS and a ceiling of 34,000 feet, making it the fastest single-engine turboprop on the market.
