America’s First Dedicated Wildfire Aircraft Takes Its Inaugural Flight

A new era in aerial firefighting dawned on September 23, 2026, with the successful maiden flight of Game Aerospace’s GB2. This aircraft, the first of its kind in the United States, was purpose-built for firefighting and took off from Louise Thaden Field in Bentonville, Arkansas. The landmark flight was piloted by Philipp Steinbach, the CEO, co-founder, and test pilot of the company.

Unlike the modified agricultural or transport planes typically adapted for firefighting, the GB2 is a clean-sheet design. It’s engineered entirely around the demanding realities of wildfire suppression. The aircraft, powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67F engine, has an empty weight of 6,050 lbs and a maximum gross weight of 19,000 lbs.

The GB2 can carry 1,200 gallons of water or fire retardant and 400 gallons of fuel. It cruises at approximately 200 knots when fully loaded. The two-seat tandem cockpit also allows it to be used for pilot training.

“The GB2’s successful first flight is the result of years of engineering, craftsmanship, and dedication from our entire team, as well as great collaboration with the FAA,” said Steinbach. The company’s stated goal is to provide aerial firefighting operators with a faster, more cost-effective initial attack aircraft — one built from the ground up for the mission.

Game Aerospace is now set to expand its flight test program. The company is working towards FAA Part 23 standard-category certification and full production.
