Emergency Windows 11 Patch Released by Microsoft Following AMD GPU Disruptions
Microsoft has hastily issued an emergency out-of-band update, KB5129195, in response to a series of severe bugs affecting millions of PCs worldwide. These issues arose following the September 2026 Patch Tuesday release, which was touted as one of the most significant Windows updates in history.
The initial September update addressed nearly 1,000 security vulnerabilities and introduced a host of new features. These included a movable taskbar (a first since Windows 95), multiple configurable Start menu layouts, an overhauled Windows Search, and clearer file size indicators in File Explorer. However, the update quickly led to complications. Users with AMD Radeon graphics cards experienced driver timeouts, black screens, missing displays, and total system freezes. Enterprise environments saw instability in Remote Desktop Services (RDS), and USB Audio Class 1.0 devices started producing “Code 10” errors, rendering some PCs entirely mute.
The emergency update, KB5129195, upgrades Windows 11 25H2 to Build 26200.9457 and version 24H2 to Build 26100.9457. It also addresses a critical elevation-of-privilege vulnerability (CVE-2026-62721) in the Windows User-Mode Power Service. The update is automatically downloaded on all PCs. However, Microsoft has admitted that issues with AMD Radeon graphics driver crashes and some USB audio problems remain unresolved. The company is still striving to provide comprehensive fixes. Owners of HP and Lenovo devices are also being advised to postpone updating due to ongoing BIOS corruption and power-management issues.
