Textron and Merlin Introduce Autonomous SkyCourier UX for Advanced Military Logistics
In a significant development in the general aviation and defense sector, Textron Aviation and autonomous flight pioneer Merlin, Inc. have collaboratively launched the Cessna SkyCourier UX™. This unmanned cargo aircraft concept is engineered to transport military supplies when traditional supply routes are either too perilous or entirely inaccessible.
The unveiling took place on September 14, 2026, at the Air & Space Forces Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference held in National Harbor, Maryland. The SkyCourier UX combines the reliable, FAA-certified twin-engine Cessna 408 turboprop airframe with Merlin Pilot—a versatile autonomous flight software that can manage takeoff, in-flight navigation, systems management, and landing without a crew on board.
As per the current design objectives, the aircraft is expected to carry approximately 6,000 pounds of payload, house up to three LD3 cargo containers, and operate from unimproved, austere runways. The design incorporates a forward-loading cargo structure and a large nose opening. It also includes an aircraft kneeling feature to enhance cargo accessibility at remote locations. The removal of the cockpit further expands the usable cargo space.
“Military planners are increasingly focused on how to sustain forces across distributed and contested operational environments,” stated Bob Gibbs, Vice President of Defense and Special Mission Sales at Textron Aviation. The SkyCourier UX aims to bridge the crucial gap between small tactical cargo drones and large, conventional military transport aircraft. This is particularly significant for Indo-Pacific operations spread over hundreds of miles of ocean.
The concept is still in the exploratory phase, with Merlin planning to conduct engineering studies and evaluations focusing on autonomous and pilot-optional resupply operations in the future.
